Tiruvallur district (also known as Thiruvallur District) is an administrative district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The town of Tiruvallur is the district headquarters. The district has a mixture of urban and rural characteristics. The Eastern part of Tiruvallur district is dominated by urban characteristics while the Southern and Northern part of the district has influence of Andhra culture due to its position. As of 2011, the district had a population of 3,728,104 with a sex-ratio of 987 females for every 1,000 males
The district has been divided into four revenue divisions viz, Tiruvallur, Tiruttani, Ambattur and Ponneri. There are three taluks under Tiruvallur division, two taluks under Tiruttani divisions, five taluks under Ambattur divisions and two taluks under Ponneri division. There are 46 firkas and 820 revenue villages. Likewise there are 14 blocks, 12 Municipalities and 13 town panchayats which implement rural development activities.

Tiruvallur (Tamil: திருவள்ளூர்) is a temple town and Grade I municipality in Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on the banks of Cooum river about 42 km (26 mi) northwest of Chennai (Madras), the capital city of Tamil Nadu and located in Chennai City.It is the administrative headquarters of Tiruvallur district. This town consists of four revenue villages namely Periakuppam, Perumpakkam and Pungathur. The town is divided into 27 wards. It is well known because of the Veera Raghavar temple which is one of the 108 sacred shrines of Vaishnavites. There is a pond nearby this temple, where the tank festival is held. There is a Siva temple near this shrine which is also quite popular among the locals. There is also a 40 feet tall Viswaroopa Panchamukha Hanuman temple, where the murti is made of a single green granite stone. Poondi reservoir from where drinking water is drawn to Chennai city is at about 9 km (5.6 mi) from this town. The neighbourhood is served by Tiruvallur railway station of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network. As of 2011, the town had a population of 56,074.
